Digital power sequencers are similar to analog sequencers except they can include built-in memory for sequencing that is digitally controlled and sequencing information that can be read back to the processor using a communication protocol such as I2C or SPI. The advantages of digital power sequencers include:

  • Reduced external component count.
  • Greater visibility and granularity of the sequence.
  • Can include additional circuitry for supervision or monitoring functions and VRM voltage setpoint adjustments to improve voltage regulator output accuracy.

Supervisory functions such as over and under voltage, fault flags, and safe state transitions are some of the additional features included with digital sequencers.
